Make this simple Easter wreath using cut out paper leaves!
In this unsettling and scary time, I’ve been finding it really helpful to craft and distract myself from it all. It’s been a helpful distraction from the news, from reading too much, or for too long, about the current situation, and also helpful in just keeping me busy whilst staying in. I’ve also found it so helpful, and lovely, to connect with friends and family in ways that we probably hadn’t before. In fact, sometimes we’d go months without seeing one another, because of the difficulties of all being free the same weekend and the distances between us, but since this all started, we’ve all connected regularly on a FaceTime, Zoom and Skype. Times like these, really do put things into perspective. I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and well, and if you want to also distract yourself by having a go at making this wreath, keep reading to find out what I used and how I did it…
First of all, take your wire wreath frame and make sure it’s nice and clean. I’d used mine before and had it from a Christmas wreath workshop, and so after cleaning it, I gave it a quick coat of copper spray pain.
Next, search online for leaf templates and download your favourites from some of the great free printables that are out there. Print these out onto card or thick paper. If you have different coloured card or paper, choose which leaves you want in each colour, and load your printer accordingly.
Decide how you want to place your leaves on the wreath frame, and then if like me you didn’t have different coloured card, mix up the colours you want your leaves to be in acrylic paint, and paint the card.
Depending on how you want your leaves to be positioned, you may need to paint on either the side with the print out or the reverse of it. Once dry, cut around the print out.
Using hot glue, stick your leaves where you want them to be. I wanted to keep my wreath quite minimal, and so I kept the design to the bottom right corner of the wreath frame.
I layered the leaves to give it depth and to mix the colours up, and stuck wire to the backs of the two leaves on the top of the design so that I could pull them forward and avoid it looking too flat.
To give it a more of an easter feel, over the join where the leaves meet, stick a plastic egg (or whatever you want!). I used one from last weeks tutorial, and cut it in half, so that it sat flat to the wreath. Again, I stuck this to the wreath with hot glue.
