A quick and easy guide on how to paint artifical foliage for Autumn!
Last week I shared with you how I quickly and easily made this faux ceramic pumpkin vase, and this week I’m sharing how I updated some artificial foliage I had leftover from our wedding last year to go in it so that it looked more Autumnal!
Autumn Leaves
I love the changing colour of the leaves in Autumn, and so I thought it was only right to bring the autumn colours inside. We have so much artificial florals and foliage left over from our wedding last year so I wasn’t too worried about painting some of them, and if anything, I figured it would give us a bit more use out of them. Eucalyptus is one of my favourites, and I’ve seen a few people online with rusty brown stems, so I decided to use paint to have a go at re-creating this look myself.
I kept the rest of the florals and foliage how they were, and really like how the rust coloured eucalyptus stems just subtly bring in some those lovely autumnal colours. Keep reading for the step-by-step tutorial, and if you enjoy this post, please do share it on social media and leave me a comment below!
1.
First of all choose your artificial flowers and foliage. I like to arrange it first and then work out which bits I’d like to look a different colour.
2.
Seperate the artificial foliage that you want in a different colour. I chose to paint just this particular type of faux eucalyptus stem.
3.
Next, mix up some acrylic paint with some baking powder. I created a rust colour after researching what colours eucalyptus turn to.
4.
Use a large brush to stipple, and dab the paint all over. Be sure to turn the foliage in all directions so that you have an even spread of paint but don’t cover the foliage entirely, you want some green to show through.
5.
Once the paint is dry, I dabbed and brushed on a dark brown to give my foliage some more depth.
6.
Once this was dry, I then added it to my floral arrangement, but you can always give it a coat of a clear sealer to protect your paint and make it last longer.
