Store your jewellery in style with a faux stone dish made from air-dry clay
It had been a while since I got the air-dry clay out and so recently I had a day of experimenting with it and making some pieces for my house. You may have already seen the Clay Donut Stem Vase that I made for my recently decorated hallway, which I think is just so cute. For that project I used peppercorns to give it some texture and a stone-like finish, but for this project I wanted to try something else.
You may remember my Clay Face Ring Dish, which I still have next to my bed and use to drop my everyday jewellery in, but with more rooms in the house, I thought it would be handy to have a dish by our guest bed. I’m loving all the veined marble that is trending at the moment, and so I decided to have a go at using curry powder (yes, you read that right, curry powder!) in my clay to create a beige veined effect.
I was really happy with how it was looking when it was wet, but I have to say that the colour of the curry powder faded as it has dried and so I’m not 100% sure this project was completely successful. The colours were definitely enhanced after sealing, but I’m wondering if using more powder would give more colour, however I do still like the subtle stone effect it gives the clay. What do you think? If you fancy a go, you can read my step-step tutorial below… Don’t forget to subscribe for updates, to share this post if you like it and follow me over on Instagram and Pinterest!
1.
First of all, break off some air-dry clay and place it in a bowel. Sprinkle some curry powder over it.
2.
Knead the curry powder throughout the clay, adding more as needed. I also added water to my hands throughout and found that this created interesting streaks of curry powder in the clay.
3.
Roll out the clay onto a flat surface that is covered in non-stick parchment paper.
4.
Use a round cutter the size you want your ring dish to be to cut out a round shape from your clay. Remove the excess (but save it for later by wrapping in clingfilm!).
5.
Carefully remove your clay from the parchment paper and using water on your finger, smooth the edges and both sides.
6.
Place the clay into a bowl that will give you the shape you want your dish to be and using water and your finger, mould the clay to the bowl shape..
7.
Leave this to dry in a stable normal temperature. Before it is completely dry (you can tell by the clay feeling colder), carefully remove the clay from the bowl. Leave to dry completely.
